I’ve been doing some fiction writing. But I’m not sure this is entirely fiction….
A highly respected obstetrician came home to his wife one day with some worrying news.
“Darling,” he said, “I’ve just seen the specialist about those pains I’ve been having. I’m afraid I’m going to have to have major abdominal surgery next month, without delay. I’ll have to cancel all my plans for weeks. The operation means cutting through several layers of muscle and fat. …But it is absolutely essential.”
“You poor love,” she said.
“Thanks darling,” he replied, “I’m going to try to be brave. It’s going to be quite a long, painful recovery and with my expert knowledge I know how many things can go wrong with surgery like this.”
“I know you’ll be my brave little soldier, sweetheart,” said his wife. “But actually this works out rather well. My niece rang today – you know, the one who’s expecting her first baby next month? Well, she’s suddenly been made homeless. So I’ve suggested we have her move in with us, and we can help her look after the baby. Of course, I’ll be out at work all day but if you are taking time off work after your op., you’ll be around all day for her.”
“Don’t be ridiculous, woman,” said the senior obstetrician in dismay. “Have you gone completely mad? How on earth can I be expected to look after a newborn baby when I’ve just had major abdominal surgery? “
“You tell me,” said his wife.
