I and virtually every doula I know, and certainly every midwife, have at many times advised pregnant mums experiencing early labour “twinges” to “take 2 paracetamol, have a warm bath and try to get some sleep”.
Could it be that this advice was NOT for the best, but in fact may have been inhibiting the onset of labour unnecessarily?
We used to say “2 paracetamol, a warm bath and a glass of wine” but of course we aren’t supposed to have alcohol in pregnancy so now it’s just the paracetamol and the warm bath.
Now, after reading THIS BLOG POST by the Undercover Midwife, it looks like I might have to cut the paracetamol out of the advice as well.
I already suspect the warm bath might contribute to slowing down contractions – but the paracetamol? Who knew?
Well, we might have to restore the glass of wine 🙂
